Mixed Pricing in Online Marketplaces
نویسندگان
چکیده
A rich theory literature predicts mixed strategies in posted prices due to standard price discrimination, search frictions, and various other rationales. While typically interpreted as implying occasional sales or price dispersion, online marketplaces enable a firm to truly use randomization as a tool in pricing, and so such behavior should be expected to arise in online settings. We investigate a case of mixed pricing across a large subset of products on a major e-commerce website. We first test for randomizing behavior, and then construct a model of price discrimination that would generate randomization as optimal behavior. We estimate the model and use it to assess pricing effects of a proposed merger in the industry. JEL classification: D43, L11, L41, L81

Increasingly data is being bought and sold online. To facilitate such transactions, online data marketplaces have emerged to provide a service for sellers to price views on their data, and buyers to buy such views. These marketplaces neither support the sale of ad-hoc queries (that are not one of the specified views), nor do they support queries that join datasets. We present QueryMarket, a pro...

In this paper we develop a quadratic programming model for partner selection and planning in integrated supply chain networks embedded with both sell-side and buy-side electronic marketplaces. Such a scenario arises in several practical applications. In particular, we consider a contract manufacturer who procures components from suppliers through a component marketplace and sells its manufactur...
متن کاملExamining the Relationship of Awareness and Seller Pricing in Online Marketplaces∗
Online marketplaces play an increasingly important role in facilitating economic transactions. In this paper, we study the link between boundedly rational seller pricing behavior and macro-level online marketplace phenomena, by employing the notion of population awareness. We develop a model of seller pricing in an online marketplace where (i) consumers must first become aware of the seller bef...
